Can you save money with
private health cover?

Having private health insurance provides a range of benefits such as earlier access to healthcare and your choice of doctor or hospital. But on top of the health benefits of private health insurance, there are also multiple government incentives designed to encourage Australians to hold private health insurance such as the Medicare Levy Surcharge and Lifetime Health Cover loading.

Health insurance and the Medicare Levy Surcharge

The Medicare Levy Surcharge is an additional government tax applicable to higher income earners who do not hold eligible private hospital insurance. The surcharge is between 1% – 1.5% of your income and can significantly increase your tax bill.

If you are covered under our Silver Plus Saver hospital policy, you are covered from paying the Medicare Levy Surcharge at tax time. And for higher income earners, the cost of a Silver Plus Saver hospital policy can actually be less than what you would have to pay under the Medicare Levy Surcharge with no private hospital cover.

Who has to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge?

The Medicare Levy Surcharge applies to higher income earners, for FY 26-27, if you earn above the following amounts and do not hold eligible cover:
tick icon Singles threshold: $105,001 and above
tick icon Families threshold: $210,001 and above

Lifetime Health Cover loading

Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading is a government initiative that applies a financial loading to your private hospital insurance premiums if you take out hospital cover after the age of 31. The purpose of this initiative is to relieve pressure on our public health system by encouraging people to take out and maintain hospital cover earlier in life.

How much is the LHC loading?

If you take out private hospital cover after the 1st July following your 31st birthday, you’ll pay a 2% loading on top of your premium for every year you are aged over 30 when you first take out cover.

The maximum LHC loading you can accrue is 70% which can make a substantial impact to the cost of your private health cover.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

An excess is an amount you agree to pay towards the cost of a hospital admission before your health insurance benefits apply.

Choosing a policy with an excess can help lower the cost of your premiums. If you’re admitted to hospital and an excess applies, you’ll generally only need to pay it once per admission (up to your policy limits).

Most of our policies have a range of different excess amounts allowing you to choose the best option for your circumstances.

A waiting period is the time between when you take out or upgrade your health insurance and when you can claim benefits for certain treatments or services.

Waiting periods are designed to ensure private health insurance is fair for all members. The length of the waiting period depends on the type of treatment or service being claimed.

If you’re switching from another Australian health fund and have already served the equivalent waiting periods, we will honour the existing waiting period served for the same level of cover.

Private hospital cover helps pay for the costs of treatment when you’re admitted to hospital as a private patient. Depending on your level of cover, your policy can help with hospital accommodation, theatre fees and medical treatments included under your policy. It also gives you more choice over where you’re treated and who provides your care.

Before receiving treatment, it’s a good idea to check that the procedure is included in your cover and whether any excess, out-of-pocket costs or waiting periods apply.

If at any time you’re not sure whether you have the right cover for a treatment or service, contact our friendly, local team who can check for you.

If you need cover for treatments that aren’t included under Silver Plus Saver, you may be able to choose a higher level of hospital cover that better suits your needs.

For example, members looking for pregnancy and birth-related services may wish to consider Silver Plus Pregnancy, while members who want cover for services such as joint replacements or cataracts may prefer Silver Plus.

Should you decide to upgrade your cover, waiting periods may apply before you can claim benefits for the newly included services.

No. Silver Plus Saver is a hospital insurance policy, so it doesn’t include benefits for services such as physiotherapy, dental check-ups or other everyday healthcare services.

If you’d like cover for services outside of hospital, you can add an extras cover product. Our extras options include benefits for services such as physiotherapy and dental, with the level of cover depending on the product you choose.

Combining hospital and extras cover can help provide more complete health insurance protection for your everyday and hospital healthcare needs.

If you currently do not have private health insurance, you will need to serve the waiting periods again regardless of any waiting periods previously served.

However, if you currently have cover from another Australian health fund and are wanting to begin a new policy with us, we will honour the existing waiting periods that have been served. If you’ve had a break in cover or if you’re upgrading to a higher level of cover with additional benefits, waiting periods may apply.

It’s important to note that if you are looking to change funds that you do not cancel your existing policy with your current health fund. Instead, contact us and we will communicate with your existing fund on your behalf to ensure a seamless transition that retains your existing waiting periods served.

The ‘Plus’ in Silver Plus Saver means our policy includes additional hospital services that go beyond the minimum requirements for a standard Silver level hospital policy. Minimum requirements are set by the Australian government to enable easier comparison for Australians when looking at multiple different policies.

Our Silver Plus Saver is designed to provide cover for a broad range of hospital treatments while excluding some higher-cost services to help keep premiums more affordable.

It’s a great option for people looking for comprehensive private hospital insurance without paying for cover they may not need.
